Ten Good Memories: Building Blocks for The Next Decade

Reflecting upon the first 10 years of The Family Center of Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods, special moments come to mind, moments that encouraged us in our journey to provide a resource center for families, moments when we knew we had the support of our community.

In recognition of our 10th anniversary, here are my top 10 memories: 

  • Brainstorming potential programs with knowledgeable, skilled community parents and professionals who are passionate about nurturing healthy children. 
  • Developing cutting-edge programs on trends that impact our children - Face Time vs. Facebook, Queen Bees, How Much is Enough?, Millennials and Technology, Is My Child on the Spectrum? 
  • Receiving the first "major" gift of $432 from the Lakeshore Optimist Club. 
  • Watching attendance grow at Family Center programs as parents affirm continuing education is important.
  •  Increasing parent skill and confidence through a deeper understanding of effective parenting strategies. 
  • Hearing animated conversations among participants about program content. 
  • Having the right person volunteer at a time when we needed specific expertise, be it branding, accounting practices, leadership or building a website. 
  • Observing friendships form as new members of the community meet other parents at Play Central. 
  • Hearing, years later, from a grateful parent that The Family Center connected them to a resource needed to solve a problem. 
  • Passing my leadership role on to a very capable second executive director.

As we embark into our second decade, my wish is that you continue to share your time, treasure and talents with The Family Center. With your assistance The Family Center can grow in its capacity to link families to the resources needed to nurture growth and happiness. Together we can build healthy, resilient and successful children and families.
