Groups for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays

Ask the Experts by Maurya Kay

Q: My son recently told us he was gay. My husband and I are very supportive and accepting, but would like to know what groups might be available to him/us as we move together on this path?

A: As we discover that our children will evolved and be shaped differently than we might have imagined, we can sometimes fear we might all be judged by our community to be an "other" rather than "one of us." This may be a reason many individuals struggle with their own, their child's, or their family member's identity as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender.

When a child comes out, their parents often go in the closet. Sometimes even those with progressive mindsets feel anxious and cautious about openly announcing their own child's LGBTQ identity.

There are support groups and organizations in communities like ours that affirm that struggle and support individuals and families on the bridge to acceptance and comfort with this newly acknowledged identity.

We recently established a Grosse Pointe chapter of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) in order to support our loved ones and ourselves through advocacy and education. We welcome people of all backgrounds. Consider attending an upcoming support meeting - you can find the dates and times on Facebook at PFLAGGP - or the first annual open house picnic.

Family and friends are welcome to socialize with the LGBTQ community of Grosse Pointe and surrounding areas. We ask that you bring a dish to share. Great food, light activities, and a group art project will enhance the good company and beautiful setting.
